Tonight in the Explorers Room: Forbidden Jazz, Kapu Dreams

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll have another all-vinyl program of organ weirdness, all-time great exotica, and exploratory jazz.  Unless the power outage at the station persists, in which case, we won't have anything, I guess (edit: all was solved in very good time, by heroic men and women at WFMU headquarters).  Either way, I'll be off in the jungle honeymooning for the rest of May, and won't return to the Explorers Room until June 7th.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Jungle Bongo, Taboo Lagoon

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll hear another program exploding with exotica: bongo exotica, vocal exotica, surf exotica, and a whole set of lagoon-themed weirdness as well.  Lots of variations on the classics tonight, with multiples of Taboo, Jungle Drums, Flamingo and Sleepy Lagoon making major appearances.  Tune in tonight, 7-10:00 EST.

New Album Art!: Flash Car – Wardobe

It's album-droppin' season. Once again extremely pleased to report another album cover making its debut in the world, this time by Flash Car (for whom, you may remember, I've done a few things in the past, including this Eddie Callahan cover cassingle on Third Uncle, and this killer 45).  This time around it's no single but at long last a full-length LP of heavy synth, psychedelic rock, & baroque pop.  It's a monster of an LP and I'm extremely pleased with how the cover turned out, if I may.

WARDROBEcheck it out, here.  On bandcamp and also on limited release vinyl, details on the latter forthcoming.

And, once more, check out this gallery of album covers I've done, if such a thing might interest you.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Directional Sounds, Polynesian Percussions, Cumbias Sabrosas

Tonight in the Explorers Room – another extremely exotic program, consisting of stereo-dynamic Directional Sound label exotica from John Evans aka Don Catelli; sublime cumbias, boleros, and gaitas from the truly exquisite Colombian outfit Los Diplomaticos aka Los Millonarios; and more, much more, in that exotic vein.  See you there, you know where. 7:00 - 10:00.

More Album Art & A Video

Two more bits of news from me today. First, check out this video I made for Barry Walker's song, "Ediacaran Moonrise" from his forthcoming album of pedal steel geologic time-dreams, Diaspora Urkontinent.

View it via the embed above or at the Gorilla vs Bear video premiere page.

The video is edited from various archival educational film reels, none of which were archived at any particularly high quality, so it inevitably has a very lo-fi look which I ultimately like a lot.  Barry's record is excellent as well, ambient diorama backdrops to the great slow drama of earth's formation, beautifully rendered in steel guitar.  Check it out here.

The next bit of new it pleases me to share is that friend of Flash Strap and comrade blogboy Spookcity, aka qualchan., has a new tape out with Andrew Weathers on Æescape Sounds, with a cover by me.  Dig the beautiful sounds and more images of the art here.  Pick up a copy for yourself, maybe.

And here's a gallery of most of my other designs, have a look.

New Album Art: Sugai Ken, Tele-N-Tech-Da

Very pleased to report a new LP cover of my design is coming out on Discrepant! The album is Tele-N-Tech-Da by the extremely excellent Sugai Ken (whose 2016 album, On The Quakefish, gets a lot of play in my world), "a kaleidoscopic radio play inspired by the traditional Japanese art of Mingei."  It's really good; I listened to it a lot while working on the cover art (which is also derived from Mingei, naturally) and found it challenging, mysterious, and highly rewarding, dense with allusion and layers of meaning yet somehow very pleasingly sparse.  Check out the Discrepant page, where Sugai Ken has included an interesting statement.

Several more cover designs & other like items to post about in the coming days.  As usual, contact me by email if you're interested in commissioning work, my studio is in full swing and looking for more projects to tackle.

And here's a gallery of most of my other designs, have a look.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: The Essential Humor of Tropical Fantasy (& Ornithological Orientations)

Tune in tonight for an evening of outlandish, colorful, absurdly lively exotica, bordering on parody and bursting with birdcall, cinematic details, and musical comedy.  Featuring the Markko Polo Adventurers, Michel Magne, and a special set of music employing the birdsong as an integral, rather than decorative, element.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Marathon Week 2 – Support Independent Radio, Win Unusual Prizes!

Tonight is night #2 of Explorers Room's participation in WFMU's annual two-week long marathon, and once again we'll be drumming up pledges and giving away awesome prizes.  Come, join in the comments, and give the station some tender to keep it broadcasting the bizarre, wonderful music and utterly unique programs that it does so well, including of course The Explorers Room and all the other amazing shows on Give the Drummer Radio.  This is important, and worthy, so if you have the means, Compañeros, please donate.  Keep GTDR on the air, keep those servers firing, and help us pay for the bandwidth that brings you truly countless hours of archived shows.

Show Tonight - 7-10:00

A $20 donation to Explorers Room (see the widget at the bottom of the post) will put you in the running for one of the nine prizes below, all but one of which are vinyl LPs this week.  $75 and over will not only put you in the running but will also guarantee you the prize of this years Explorers Room premium, 3 Taboos (And Other Exotic Motifs). Obscure and lesser-known exotica, only the best and strangest pearls found hidden in my dusty collection of exotica LPs.  Curated and ripped exclusively by yours truly, the first time I've ever actually really done that.  It's pretty good, I think.
